Gas used for cooking, lighting, heating and commercial purposes was manufactured and stored at the Patchogue Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Site. The MGP was constructed by the Patchogue Gas Company in approximately 1904 and produced gas continuously through 1914 and intermittently into the 1920’s, in which era the company was acquired by the Long Island Lighting Company. The MGP was then modified to distribute under high pressure gas produced off-site. The distribution facility remained until the 1970’s, when LILCO sold the site to third parties. From the mid-1970s through early 2005, the site was used as a refrigeration equipment and scrap storage yard, before KeySpan (now National Grid) acquired it in May 2005 for purposes of remediation.
The by-products of gas production and storage that spilled, leaked, or were disposed on the site are responsible for contamination which is now being addressed through am investigation and remediation process being conducted under the oversight of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation by National Grid. National Grid is responsible for the investigation and remediation of the Site because it was operated by a predecessor company at the time the contamination occurred.
This website provides information on Patchogue former MGP Site, the investigation and remediation project and opportunities for public participation. National Grid is committed to the protection and enhancement of the environment, always seeking ways to minimize the environmental impacts of our past, present and future activities. We hope this website, a part of our public participation and outreach efforts, is helpful and informative. The Site Remedy for the Patchogue former MGP Site was completed in November 2020. National Grid will provide updates about the site, including posting documents about the site disposition, such as groundwater monitoring reports. Site related Major Reports and an Archive of past website activity updates can be found under the Key Documents tab of this website.
In addition, any questions pertaining to the site can be posed by calling the project Hotline at (631) 348-6250.
Site Remedy Completed November 6 2020
Posillico Environmental, Inc. (Posillico), completed the remedy implementation on both the on-site and off-site properties. The final activities completed included installation of the asphalt pavement cover, construction of the post-remediation stormwater management system, and installation of the perimeter fence. Crack monitoring gauges were removed and construction equipment was demobilized. A final site inspection was conducted with National Grid.
The Site Management Plan and Final Engineering Report were finalized and approved in January 2024. An Environmental Easement was established for the site property, as required by the NYSDEC. Semi-annual groundwater sampling continues to be conducted on the Site.
